Eligon IP is pleased to announce that Managing Partner Amy Hsiao has been invited by the Practicing Law Institute to present a one-hour Briefing on the two developments reshaping brand protection in China this year. She will be joined by Eligon’s fantastic paralegal Brita McDaniel.

The program, Winning in Court, Winning the Crowd: Louis Vuitton v. Molly Tea and the Top 7 Changes in China’s New Trademark Law, takes place Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 3:00 PM EDT as a live webcast, and carries one CLE credit in Georgia and New York. Read more and register here.

Within a single month this summer, China gave brand owners two reasons to revisit their strategy. The National People’s Congress passed the most significant overhaul of the Trademark Law since 2019 — reaching bad-faith filings, opposition timing, online use, well-known marks, and abusive litigation — effective January 1, 2027. Days later, the Suzhou Intermediate People’s Court awarded Louis Vuitton approximately USD 1.5 million against tea chain Molly Tea in a decision that drew hundreds of millions of views on Chinese social media and set off a national debate about how far brand rights should reach.

Amy has been among the most-quoted commentators on the Molly Tea decision, including in World Trademark Review. Her session connects the two stories: what the new law requires brand owners to do before it takes effect, and what the Molly Tea reaction teaches about enforcing rights in a market where a legally sound win can still cost a brand something.

Attendees will leave with a concrete pre-January action plan and what needs to be done to be prepared for the new law in China.

The Briefing is designed for in-house counsel, brand protection professionals, and outside practitioners responsible for trademarks in China and across Asia.
