After decades of dominating global trademark filings by volume, China is finally showing signs of slowing down. Since 2020, we’ve observed a decrease in total trademark filings, hitting a low in 2022. In fact, the number of trademarks in China is so high it accounts for over 40% of the trademarks worldwide.
The good news is that Chinese authorities are not only cooling things down but also encouraging QUALITY trademark filings, reducing zombie marks and bad faith registrations. See the charts below for the total number of trademark applications in China (2014-2023).
